Chardonnay is the other major grape variety in Burgundy, along with Pinot Noir, of which it is the most important descending.

It is said to take its name from the village of Chardonnay in the Haut-Mâconnais region, and this is the reason why this wine-growing village, along with twenty-six other villages, can mention Mâcon-Chardonnay on its wine labels.

Chardonnay adapts easily to its environment, making it one of the most popular grape varieties planted in the world and represents 51% of the vines grown in Burgundy.

Chardonnay is a white grape variety with small, elongated bunches and airy berries that take on a magnificent golden yellow colour when the grapes change colour, while the leaves remain a deep green. It is an early variety, which makes it sensitive to the spring frosts that have become increasingly frequent in recent decades.

Chardonnay is at the heart of the reputation of the great white wines of the Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais and Chablis.

At Domaine MIA, our Chardonnay is a wine coming from our plot of Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise "Joli Bois" which is located in Mercurey.
