Burgundy is one of the few wine-growing regions in the world to associate wine so closely with the land that produces it. This has given rise to a very Burgundian concept: the climats.
Burgundy has more than 1,200 of them across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune!
The climat reflects the specific characteristics of the land, the geology, but also the surrounding nature and exposure to the elements, since each ingredient contributes to the character and quality of the wine produced there.
The Climats also tell the story of the men and women of Burgundy and bear the imprint of an authentic regional character acquired over more than 20 centuries of winegrowing in Burgundy.
In fact, when you look at the names of the Climats, you realise just how important they are bear witness to the long history of Burgundy's vineyards since the Middle Ages, whether they relate to the natural environment, heritage or human know-how.
A climat corresponds to a plot of land where a single grape variety is grown and vinified separately. The winemaker's know-how enables the wine to express all the personality of its climat, even giving it its name.
Knowing the Climats means understanding what gives the wines of Burgundy their unique identity.
