Originally, a Clos was a plot of vines surrounded by dry stone walls.Built from the Middle Ages onwards, these walls were originally intended to protect the vines from the ravages of the herds of animals that then grazed freely around the villages.
Today, some of these enclosures still exist and continue to protect the vines from outside elements such as the wind. Over the years, they have also given their names to famous vineyards such as Clos de Vougeot.
In Burgundy, the terms "clos" or "clos monopole" can be protected by Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), which means that only wines produced from grapes grown in these clos can bear these specific designations.
At Domaine Mia, we are lucky enough to be able to vinify grapes from the Clos La Marche Monopole, which produces a Mercurey classified as a "Grand Vin de Bourgogne".
