Sulphites are present in almost all wines, either as a natural product of alcoholic fermentation or added in varying quantities depending on the type of wine (sweet, semi- dry, white or red). Sulphites are natural or added chemical compounds containing the sulphite ion (SO3^2-).
During the winemaking process, sulphites are often added to grape must or wine to prevent oxidation and the growth of undesirable bacteria, as well as to maintain the wine's freshness and stability during storage and transport.
Some people may be sensitive or allergic to sulphites, so the words "contains sulphites" are compulsory if their concentration exceeds 10 mg/l. It may be replaced by one of the following statements: "contains sulphur dioxide" or "contains sulphur dioxide".
At Domaine Mia, we limit the addition of sulphites as much as possible and offer a Burgundy wine "Bourgogne sans sulfites ajoutés" with no added sulphites vin de Bourgogne sans sulfites ajoutés.
